The owners, after unsuccessfully searching for an acceptable building lot, decided to convert their "starter home" into their "move up home." The second floor expansion program of 964 square feet nearly doubled the living area with a total area of 1972 square feet.
New England imagery was chosen for its simplicity of geometric shape and its natural blending with the surrounding neighborhood.
A modified saltbox lent itself to sheltering the front of the house with privacy from the street, while also providing a thermal barrier from the cold northern elements. Conversely, the rear of the house allows full height exposure to the sunny southern elevation while providing complete openness to the natural privacy of the back yard. |
